There's a rom hack of Mario 64 DS that makes the controls more like Mario 64 on the N64, including inverting the run button behavior so that you run by default. On the page I'm linking, look for the controls test in the OP and download it. I remember there being a couple different files in there, so look for the patch called vanilla. That'll be the original game with the new controls that doesn't require a special emulator. Trust me, you'll never go back to Ninty's version. Just downloaded it, looking forward to checking it out.

Super Mario 64 DS is so superior to the original in every way. Except for those damn controls. The graphics are great (especially for an early DS game!), the new stars and levels are great, the different characters feel actually different and not like an afterthought.

Everything about it is better, except for those damned awful controls.Does it change anything about movement other than making running the default? Like, better turning or acceleration or anything? For anyone else wondering, yes, it changes a variety of things such as adding new control profiles, N64 wall-kick behavior, removing Luigi's floating spin after a backflip, letting Yoshi break blocks. That's what I remember off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more. Unfortunately, there aren't individual patches for the different changes–it's all or nothing.

I also don't know if it's possible to find earlier versions of the controls test or if you can only download the latest one.
